Women’s Rights in Islam: Do Women Really Have Freedom?

When people talk about Islam and women, there is often confusion. Many think Muslim women don’t have rights. But the reality is much simpler—and more human—than that.

Let’s understand it in an easy way.

Some people believe:

Women have no choice in marriage

Women are not allowed to study or work

Women are forced in everything

 Women have no freedom

These ideas mostly come from what people see in some societies, not from what Islam actually teaches.

Islam always teaches kindness and gentleness towards women.

The Holy Prophet ď·ş said that if a man wants his wife to care about him and present herself well for him, then he should also do the same for her. This shows that relationships in Islam are based on mutual respect.

Islam gives a woman the right to choose her life partner. She cannot be forced into marriage. For example, when the marriage of Hazrat Ali (RA) and Hazrat Fatima (RA) was arranged by Allah, the Holy Prophet ď·ş still asked Hazrat Fatima (RA) if she was happy with it. This clearly shows that a woman’s consent is important in Islam.

The Holy Prophet ď·ş said:

“The best among you are those who are best to their wives.”

Islam does not stop women from gaining knowledge. In fact, seeking knowledge is compulsory for both men and women. The Holy Prophet ď·ş even set aside a special day for women where they could freely ask questions. This shows that Islam encourages women to learn and grow.

Islam gives women financial rights in marriage. A woman has the right to decide her mahr* (dowry)The husband is required to pay it

If a woman is not happy in her marriage, she has the right to seek khula (divorce). If the husband is harmful, unjust, or does not fulfill her rights, she is allowed to leave the marriage. While the process may be difficult in some cultures, the right itself exists in Islam.

A woman has a share in her father’s inheritance She also has a share in her husband’s inheritance

Mothers are given a very high status  Kindness and fairness toward women are repeatedly taught But sometimes, people’s behavior does not reflect these teachings—and this happens in every society.

In Islam, daughters are considered a blessing. The Holy Prophet ď·ş said that if someone raises three daughters well, he will be with him in Paradise.

He also advised:

“Fear Allah when it comes to women.”

Islam gives women many rights—clear and meaningful ones. But the problem is not the teachings—it is how people follow them. So instead of judging Islam by people, it is better to understand what Islam actually teaches.
